Weekend Woodcarving Workshop

All Events

Event Navigation

Join sculptor Natasha Houseago for a weekend of woodcarving. This is a two day introductory taster where each participant learns which woods are suitable to carve as well as all the basic carving techniques to allow them to continue carving at home. The course will be held outside (covered if the weather is bad) with beautiful views over Woodchester Park. Starting with locally fallen green timber you’ll learn how to debark, plan your design according to the natural shape of the wood, and block-out using a bow saw. You’ll then begin the carving process using a chisel and mallet. To finish the sculpture you’ll use rasps, scrapers and oils. The course is suitable for beginners and those with previous experience. This weekend would make an ideal Christmas or birthday present for a budding woodcarver!

The course will start at 10am and finish 4pm on both days, with a break for lunch. It’s relatively physical work and the minimum age is 14 years old. There are a maximum of 10 places and all woods, tools and equipment will be supplied. The cost includes lunch in our café on both the Saturday and the Sunday (bowl of soup, light lunches or burgers, gluten free and vegan options available).

If you’d like to stay onsite then please book camping with us as soon as possible – weekends in May are nearly always fully booked in advance.

We need at least 5 participants to run this course – if we need to cancel you will be given a full refund and at least two weeks’ notice. If you have any questions or would like more information then please email info@thistledown.org.uk.
